Rajasthan Trip – A Mother…

with 2 comments

…This post is part of the Rajasthan Trip series of posts where I have recorded memories and experiences from the trip…

A mother...

A mother...

The train was on a halt for some time now… It was Bhopal Junction… Around 23:30 hours… Got down… Stretched myself… Roamed around for few minutes… Thought of getting my Mobile phone and BlackBerry batteries charged… Got the chargers out from my bag… Walked on the platform from boogie to boogie to find vacant and working charging point… Found one past the Pantry Car… Started with phone on the free socket while the other was taken by another young male… Just as the train moved a lady arrived with her daughter and sat down in the lobby… One of those beggar women with her child… She took her daughter in her lap, made her comfortable and covered her with her Saree ‘pallu’…

I was standing mum like a statue swaying with the train, and changing positions from one leg to other every few minutes… Guess I was better sleeping… Frustrated standing in the night just to charge idiot phones (sometimes wonder if we own a phone or vice-versa), I started walking back towards my Boogie… 1st boogie to cross was Pantry Car and it was locked!!! There was no option but to wait for the next Station to come so that I could walk back from the platform to the other side… Just felt like hitting myself!!! Dam!!! Walked back… Plug-ed in my BlackBerry this time… Powered it up and checked train schedule… Next Station Bina… Arrival 1:40 am… That was another One and Half hours!!! Uff, well, Ummm… @#$@%#^@#% How silly was that???

The Mother picked up a nearby thrashed newspaper and spread it on the floor… Yeah, the girl was not that young to be carried in lap for long… She off-loaded her daughter on to it…

Passed few minutes checking office mails and browsing some stuff… Checked my wrist-watch… It was still more than an hour to go… I thought of sitting down… But there was almost no space around to sit… The place was occupied by another male (sitting at some distance next to the female) and the other young man who was still charging his music phone and listening to it at the same time… Walked across the connecting bridge to other side… And sat  down facing the female… The lady looked young… Into 20s or maybe even less… Our eyes meet unknowingly a few times… The worn-out dirty Saree without a bath for many days was looking even more dirty… Her hair looked more brown than black due to dirt and soil…

It seemed like the girl was not well and shivering in intervals… Usually, if not my eyes at least my heart gets a bit moist… I was seeing all this without any reactions… Maybe I was feeling sleepy or maybe the Pantry car locking itself left me more frustrated or maybe like most of us I was just used to seeing all this… Another light shiver from the girl… This one persisted longer that the earlier ones… … … … Followed by a violent one… Closing down her body even more… Her knees trying to dig into her maybe empty stomach and her hands closing onto her throat maybe trying to free her soul off the pains… And came the first reaction from my side… Some jerk from within… Trying to leap forward to do something for her…

  1. 1) Your writing makes me feel like i am there, the place u are talking about.
    2) How come u always get into situations like these?
    3) You are different, unlike all(which includes me also) who simply turn around and ignore and move on like nothing happened.
All in all. I wish we could have done something for ppl like the mother and girl and as for the guy, apart from thrashing I feel, if it wasn’t for his desire, the mother couldn’t have been able to arrange food for her daughter. The source was not right, atleast they could survive another day.

  2. 1. Thanks… 🙂
    2. Don’t know, I guess its just a habit that I got into in Engineering with one of my best friends… Keep eyes open, observe, analyze and THINK…
    3. Well, I was same or more or less same… But then 2. (above) helps me… Once you THINK, it helps one to become sensitive… And only people that are sensitive enough ACT… Unless there is action, anytime else is just USELESS!!!

well, enough of philosophy, lets do our bit…

This bit can be anything from joining a non-profit organization and give your TIME for people… There are 100s of them out there, and they need people to help them out…

-Go and spend few minutes with poor children, educate then…
-Visit a government hospital on a Sunday or Ur office Holiday and just pick a few illiterate patients out there and make sure that they are treated properly and no doctor is able to take undue advantage because of these people are illiterate…
-Spend 500/month (2-3 movies tickets) on a poor child and buy him books for him… U can find chunks of these students in any Government school… No, just the books wont help, maybe you can also try to spend a few hrs coaching them…

See, the list is endless, what matters in these bits – giving a share of Ur life (time) to others… Because giving time gives others the ‘environment’ because of which U are ‘U’ today… ‘U’ are writing\reading this ‘piece of writeup’ and ‘those’ out there are ‘fucking’ women out there… I strongly believe ‘U’ would have also been doing the same thing if you belonged to that environment and those fuckers would have also come up with an excellent writeup like you!!! had they been born in Ur kinda environment… Maybe good parents like Urs, good friends, education that you got, etc. etc…

Its the environment that makes the biggest difference!!! Share it as much as you can, in whatever bit you can…
